During the event
Where to check first
Visit at opening, during the first cooking rush, and after equipment changes or a reported power interruption.
Added equipment? Record what is actually running and refer changes to the electrical lead before connecting it.

Two-spider groups: which booths on which box
Boxes drop at the west and east ends of E, H, and K. Each row is cut once; the outer 20 ft of every row stay with the near box, and the cuts are placed to keep the two loads as even as the estimates allow, so an undeclared appliance lands on a box with headroom either way.

Before-opening checklist
- Identify the electrical lead and contact number; tell operators where the 4 spare adapters are.
- Confirm spider drop locations and actual cable routes with the lead.
- Have the venue electrician confirm feed-breaker locations, protection, and which receptacles share a leg.
- Check actual vendor equipment, especially undeclared loads and unconfirmed estimates.
- Confirm split-power connections, and that E, H, and K are wired to the planned west/east split in the table above.
- Record each group's completion and unresolved items with the lead before opening.
Lead contact, spare location, and group sign-off must be supplied on the day. This guide does not record completed checks.
Vendors with their own power
D3 Ako’s; F9 Baan Thai: site power for lights only; cooking equipment uses their own generators.

Power analysis & contingency inventory
The organizer's assessment: is the power adequate, where is the risk, and what has to be bought or confirmed.
Demand against supply
| Estimated demand | 80,800 W across 115 booths (109 vendor booths + 6 Seating Areas) |
| Installed capacity | 216,000 W (15 spiders × ~14,400 W) |
| Overall utilisation | 37% |
| Busiest spider | 8,450 W in Group C (59% of one spider) |
| Booths over one adapter's budget | 6 |
The supply is comfortably adequate. Total demand is barely a third of installed capacity, and the busiest spider remains well within its rating. Capacity is not the constraint on this layout.
Where the load actually sits
Load is spread evenly. Per-box draw runs from 4,200 W to 8,450 W, with Group B exempt from equalisation (§2.3); two-spider groups follow the planned west/east split (§3.7). The three heaviest:
- Group C — 8,450 W over 1 spider = 8,450 W (59%)
- Group A — 6,400 W over 1 spider = 6,400 W (44%)
- Group L — 6,300 W over 1 spider = 6,300 W (44%)
Group C is the one to watch: it is the heaviest per spider and has only one, so any heavy booth added there lands on a single box.
The real risk is estimation, not capacity
23 booths (20% of all booths) carry a placeholder load — the edible booths listed under Arrival follow-up that declared no equipment. For a booth selling cooked food the 200 W baseline is a placeholder, not an estimate; it is where the numbers above are most likely to be wrong.
Stress-testing that assumption, by giving every one of them equipment they did not declare:
| Scenario | Demand | Busiest spider | Spiders over capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| As estimated today | 80,800 W | 8,450 W (59%) | none |
| +one 1,500 W appliance each | 115,300 W | 10,388 W (72%) | none |
| +3,000 W each (two appliances) | 149,800 W | 14,888 W (103%) | E |
One undeclared appliance each is absorbed; two is not. At 1,500 W apiece the busiest spider reaches 72% and nothing breaches. At 3,000 W apiece, 1 spider would go over capacity (group E), peaking at 103%.
That upper case is deliberately harsh — it assumes every one of the 23 is a serious cooking operation, which they are not (several are drinks and packaged desserts). But it sets the priority plainly: the margin here comes from the estimates being roughly right, not from spare capacity. Confirming the undeclared booths is what converts that assumption into a fact, and any group where several turn out to cook will need rebalancing.
To procure
- Adapters: deploy 60 (one per connection), 64 on hand (38 × 3-outlet + 26 × 4-outlet) — 4 spare. Nothing to buy. The 39-adapter minimum is the floor, not the plan.
- Outlets: 121 needed. 64 adapters give 218; 60 give at least 180.
- Spiders: 15, unchanged — one per group, two in E, H, K.
To confirm before the event
- The 23 placeholder-load booths listed under Arrival follow-up — a phone call each asking what they plug in. This is the single highest-value thing left to do on power.
- Shelby County Election (B4, 200 W) — carries a menu-based estimate rather than a declaration (§1.4). Confirm before finalising Group B.
- Pho Boba Tea Arlington (E8, 3,900 W) — carries a menu-based estimate rather than a declaration (§1.4). Confirm before finalising Group E.
- Nga Ao Dai and Cafe (I2, 1,200 W) — carries a menu-based estimate rather than a declaration (§1.4). Confirm before finalising Group I.
- Standing judgement calls in §1.5 — the Boba Boba Life heater count, the food-steamer wattage and the chest-freezer wattage.
1. Estimating a booth's load (the `Wattage` column)
1.1. Every booth gets a 200 W baseline for lights, including vendors with no electrical equipment. Seating Areas are the exception: they draw nothing (0 W) and take no outlet.
1.2. Vendors listing equipment in Electrical Equipment or Electrical Other add an estimate per item:
| Appliance | Watts | Appliance | Watts | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| blender | 700 | rotisserie machine | 1600 | |
| rice cooker | 700 | electric griddle | 1500 | |
| espresso machine | 1300 | electric deep fryer | 1700 | |
| electric kettle | 1500 | microwave | 1200 | |
| sealer machine | 400 | cotton candy machine | 1000 | |
| waffle iron/machine | 1000 | popcorn machine | 1500 | |
| sauce warmer | 500 | sugarcane machine | 1000 | |
| food warmer | 1000 | air fryer | 1500 | |
| food warmers (plural) | 2000 | electric grill | 1500 | |
| sushi/station cooler | 400 | electric pot | 1200 | |
| plug-in cooler | 150 | pancake maker | 1000 | |
| portable fridge | 100 | medium refrigerator | 300 | |
| fan | 75 | water heater kettle | 1500 | |
| food steamer | 1500 | chest freezer | 300 |
1.3. Self-powered vendors — own generator or power source for their cooking equipment — count as lights-only (200 W). The generator runs the appliances, but the booth still plugs its lights into the spider, so it takes one outlet and the 200 W baseline like any other booth. Mark them Yes in the spreadsheet's Self Powered column; the setup-day sheet lists them.
All 16 food trucks are self-sufficient. They bring their own power, draw
nothing from any spider, and are excluded from every figure in this document
and from the whole of --power. Only the booths in groups A–L are on site
power.
1.4. Wattage reflects only what vendors declared, so a food vendor listing no equipment counts as lights-only. Where a menu obviously requires equipment the vendor did not declare, estimate from the menu and record the reasoning in the Electrical Other cell, flagged for confirmation, so the assumption travels with the data rather than living in a document.
1.5. Standing judgement calls (organizer decisions, not derivable): - Boba Boba Life declared "Hot water heaters" (plural); the count is presumed 1 (2026-08-27). A second heater adds 1,500 W. - Food steamer is estimated at 1,500 W (2026-09-01, VK Delicious Khmer Food): a steamer runs a kettle-class heating element continuously. - Chest freezer is estimated at 300 W (2026-09-04, Krazybytes): rated like the medium refrigerator — compressor running load with start-up headroom; it runs all evening, not just through the rush. - Any vendor whose confirmed equipment differs from the estimate should be corrected in the spreadsheet, then rebuilt.
2. Spiders and balancing
2.1. Spiders — which groups have how many. Fifteen boxes in total. Every group has one, except the three 20-unit centre-column blocks, which have two:
| Spiders | Groups | Per group |
|---|---|---|
| two | E, H, K | ~28,800 W, 8 connections |
| one | A, B, C, D, F, G, I, J, L | ~14,400 W, 4 connections |
Each spider has 4 × 30 A connections — about 3,600 W per connection and ~14,400 W per spider. E, H and K get the second box because they are the largest groups (20 units against 16 or fewer), not because they draw more per booth; it also means a heavy booth there lands on one of two boxes rather than the group's only one.
The boxes are CEP portable distribution units (UL 1640), nameplate 60 A at 120/240 V — the 14,400 W above, arriving as two 120 V legs of 60 A — with four TT-30R 30 A 125 V receptacles and no breaker at the receptacle (checked on the boxes, 2026-09-01). Overcurrent protection is the 60 A breaker at the feed, so an overloaded adapter heats rather than trips, and the per-adapter and per-outlet limits in §3.2 are enforced by hand. Confirm with the venue electrician which receptacles share a leg (presumably two each) and where each box's feed breaker is.
2.2. Primary goal: minimise overload risk. Every spider has the same fixed capacity regardless of how big its group is, so equalise estimated wattage per spider, not in proportion to group size. The nine 1-spider groups target roughly equal group wattage; the 2-spider groups target roughly double that, split between their two boxes as evenly as the row cuts allow (§3.7).
2.3. Group B is exempt from equalisation (agreed with the organizer: B draws little and that is fine). It anchors the sponsor strip rather than carrying load.
2.4. The one hard constraint on layout: no spider may be loaded past
its capacity. Nothing else about electricity restricts where a vendor
sits. --power prints the current per-spider spread; run it after any
move that shifts a heavy booth between groups.
2.5. The spreadsheet holds no derived totals — it owns the per-vendor
input (booth type, declared equipment, the resulting Wattage) and nothing
that restates something computable. Run --power for totals.
3. Adapters and power drops (setup day)
3.1. Each adapter is a 30 A RV distribution adapter cord (NEMA TT-30P male → 5-15R/5-20R household outlets) plugged into one spider connection. They come in 3-outlet and 4-outlet models; on-hand inventory is 38 × 3-outlet + 26 × 4-outlet = 64 against 60 spider connections.
3.2. Limits, for the crew running cord: 3,750 W absolute maximum per adapter (30 A × 125 V); working budget ≤ 3,000 W (80% continuous load — cooking equipment runs for hours); ≤ 1,800 W per outlet (15 A); up to 4 vendors per adapter.
3.3. How many adapters a group needs. A minimum, from two independent limits in §3.2 — the working budget, and the four-vendors cap:
adapters(group) = max( ceil(group load / 3,000 W),
ceil(adapter slots / 4) )
where a booth over 3,000 W takes two slots, since it must be split (§3.5)
outlets(booth) = ceil(booth load / 1,800 W), at least 1
The ceiling is physical. Each adapter takes one of a spider's four
connections, so a group can run at most 4 adapters per spider — four in
the 1-spider groups, eight in E, H and K. If a group's minimum ever exceeds
that, no amount of stock helps: the load has to move to another group, or
that group needs a second spider. --report fails on this.
A 3-outlet adapter covers three outlets, so where a group needs more outlets
than 3 × adapters, the difference must be made up with 4-outlet units.
--power prints that figure per group.
This is a floor, not the plan. The plan is one adapter on every connection — four per spider. The minimum packs adapters close to the working budget. Spreading the same booths over every connection lowers the load on each adapter and leaves headroom for undeclared equipment. Circuit protection still needs the venue electrician's confirmation described in §2.1; do not assume a separate breaker at each receptacle. Full deployment also relaxes the outlet mix: a group that needs 4-outlet units at the minimum can run 3-outlet units at full deployment. The setup-day sheet carries both figures — Deploy is what to wire, the two minimum columns are the floor if adapters run short — and the stock line says whether more must be bought. Carry the spares.
3.4. Adapter assignment is not a planning constraint. Which vendor plugs into which adapter is settled on site by the crew wiring each group, who can see the spider drops, the cord lengths, and who actually turned up with what. Planning only has to make the wiring possible: a group's load must fit its spiders (§2.4) and enough adapters must be on hand (§3.1, §3.3). Electricity does not constrain where a vendor sits, so long as group totals stay balanced.
3.5. What planning still owes the crew: a flag on every booth over the
3,000 W working budget, since it cannot sit behind one adapter and must
have its appliances split across two. Mark it on the vendor's booth
instructions. The setup-day sheet lists them under booths needing more
than one outlet; --power marks them SPLIT in the per-vendor breakdown.
3.6. Power drops are physical; placement is not. Spiders drop at fixed points — one per group, two in E, H and K, roughly at the block's west and east ends. Cords run from there. Booth positions are set without reference to that wiring.
3.7. Two-spider groups are wired by one cut per row. The two boxes drop
at the block's west and east ends, so each row (north and south) is cut
once: booths west of the cut run to the west box, the rest to the east
box. The outer 2 units of every row — the 20 ft nearest each box — always
wire to that box; between them the two cuts are placed to make the box
loads as even as possible, ties going to the cuts nearest the centre line.
Reviewed fixed cuts may preserve existing connections after a small layout
change; all capacity and outer-edge limits still apply. Group K retains its
reviewed cuts; K8 is held as Available.
build-directory.py applies the rule; the resulting split is printed in
the setup-day sheet (Two-spider groups) and the operator guide, and the
map's group label shows both boxes (west + east). Booths drawing nothing
(Seating Areas) take no cord and are not listed. The difference between
the boxes is kept small deliberately: the loads are estimates, and an
undeclared appliance should land on a box with headroom whichever side it
turns up on.
